Pedestrian and Cycling Advocates Session with Scott Bricker

Roads, Rails, and Trails would like to invite cycling and pedestrian advocates, activists, and enthusiasts to join us Monday September 21st from 7pm to 9:30 pm at the Ambrosia Centre (638 Fisgard St.) to help launch the next phase of the CRD Pedestrian and Cycling Masterplanning process. This event is free of charge.
The project consultants, Alta Planning + Design will be facilitating the event and special guest speaker, Scott Bricker is up from Portland to speak to the important role that Advocates play in moving the active transportation agenda forward.
Many of you will remember that Scott was hoping to be with us to take your questions following the screening of Veer, but was unable to come. Now is your to see him!

Veer Screening
After packed houses for its two premier screenings at the Victoria Film Festival, Veer a documentary about the exciting bicycle culture in Portland is coming back to Victoria.

All proceeds from this event will go toward helping pay for the this amazing film, and to support the
SPOKES program at UVic.
Time and place
The event will take place Thursday, March 19th in the
David Lam Auditorium in the MacLaurin building at UVic. Doors open at 6:30pm, and the show will start at 7pm.
Ticket information
Tickets are $8 and are avialble at the following locations:
- UVSS Resource Centre in the SUB at UVic (not the Info Booth);
- SPOKES Storage Cage during regular work party hours - 5 days a week at the UVic campus (details);
- Reckless Bike Store at Government and Chatham;
- Habit Coffee and Culture at 552 Pandora Avenue; or
- by emailing pollock@theorem.ca.
Travel Green
UVic is accessible by bus, bike, taxi, foot, and private vehicle.
Ample bicycle parking available on site free of charge. Should you choose to drive, closest parking is in LOT E or LOT 6. Evening parking fees of $2 are in effect.
Get Involved
If your organization would like to set up a booth at the event, or get involved in another way, please let us know as soon as possible. There will be limited space available for tables and displays.
The following groups will be presenting displays:
- The University of Victoria Bike Users Committee and SPOKES;
- Bike to Work;
- Island Transformations;
- Sierra Club Victoria Group;
- Global Agents for Change - Riding to Break the Cycle -- 25 youth will cycle from Vancouver to Tijuana this summer and another 25 will be cycling from Amsterdam to Istanbul with the aim of fighting world poverty through the use of, and education about, microcredit; and
- Otesha Project - UVic students Seth Wright and Ashling Ligate will be taking part in the Otesha Tour in 2009 and selling sweet and savoury snacks at VEER to help pay for their journey. They will travel by bicycle throughout parts of Canada performing a play and offering workshops on sustainability and social justice issues to schools and community groups.
Meet Adam Giambrone
Adam Giambrone, city councillor and chair of the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) spoke about the role that young people can play in politics and the world. We was also in town for the transit related event listed below.
User and Climate Friendly Transportation for the Island
Adam Giambrone, Chair of the Toronto Transit Commission gave an open public lecture on the opportunities and challenges in a comprehensive transit network. As well, that afternoon took part in a panel discussion hosted by the UVSS, and took part in a number of smaller gatherings, press events, and consultations with politicians, planners, BC Transit, and advocacy groups.
Our speakers also met with a number of groups, politicians, planners, media, and members of the community.
Planning a Transportation Network for the Island
